Phillips Brother's Country Ham, Inc., Asheboro, North Carolina has been awarded the Smoked Country Ham Grand Champion at the National Country Ham Associations's 12th annual convention in Morehead, North Carolina held April 2-3, 2004.
Phillips Brother's Country Ham competed in the first annual competition hosted by the National Country Ham Association during the annual convention. Country Ham were entered in the competition from Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina.
Judges included Dr. Jay Wenther, American Association of Meat Processors, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania; Dr. John Henson, California State University at Fresno, California; Dr. Norman Marriott, Retired Professor Emeritus Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State College, Blacksburg, Virginia; Dr. Estes Reynolds, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia; Dr. Benji Mikel, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky; and Dr. Twain Pilkington, Retired Professor Emeritus, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina.
The National Country Ham Association was organized in 1992 to represent interests and concerns which could not be represented or could be represented with great difficulty by the individual companies. Promotion, development and improvement of the business of country ham curers, and co-operative methods of production, promotion, education, advisement, and trade shows are primary goals of the National Country Ham Association.

Phillips Brothers Cured Country Hams was awarded Reserve Grand Champion in the Unsmoked Country Ham class. All entries were judged on the basis of aroma, flavor, eye appeal, color and texture.
The American Cured Meat Champions are held each year as a part of the American Convention of Meat Processors, annually draws hundreds of entries from the entire United States. This year there were 642 entries in 29 product categories. www.aamp.com
Phillips Brothers Country Hams was also the Reserved Grand in 2001 in the uncooked country ham category.
